He doesn't cry, he doesn't reach for the cloth. Out of sight, out of mind, in the most literal sense.

laiba: It’s mind-blowing to think about, isn't it? At that stage, there is no concept of a permanent object. The baby’s reality is entirely bound to immediate perception. If they can't see it or touch it, it’s gone from the universe.

Nova: Exactly! But fast forward to when Laurent is about eight months old. Piaget hides the toy under Cloth A. Laurent, having developed a bit, reaches out, lifts Cloth A, and happily grabs the toy. Success! But then, Piaget does something clever. While Laurent is watching closely, Piaget takes the toy and hides it under Cloth B. Now, you’d think Laurent would look under Cloth B, right? But he doesn't! He immediately goes back to look under Cloth A. This is what psychologists call the A-not-B error.

In his mind, the toy isn't an independent object sitting under Cloth B. Instead, the toy is 'the thing I find when I lift Cloth A.' His action the object. It takes months of physical exploration for him to accommodate his mental schema and realize that objects exist independently of his actions.

Nova: It’s like a real-life magic trick where the child is the magician! And Piaget saw a similar pattern with his daughter, Jacqueline, and what he called 'circular reactions.' When Jacqueline was a tiny infant, she’d accidentally suck her thumb. It felt good, so she’d try to repeat it. That’s a primary circular reaction, focused entirely on her own body. Later, she’d accidentally shake a rattle and hear a cool sound. She’d do it again and again. That’s a secondary circular reaction, focusing on an external object. And eventually, she reached tertiary circular reactions, where she’d drop a toy from different heights, over and over, just to see what would happen. She was actively experimenting with the world!

laiba: She was a tiny scientist! And think about the psychological impact of this. Those repetitive physical actions are the literal scaffolding of human logic. Before we can think in abstract concepts, we have to physically manipulate the world. But here is the kicker for us as adults: do we ever truly outgrow the A-not-B error?

laiba: I think we do it all the time in our professional and personal lives! Think about when a business faces a new crisis. Instead of looking at the new data—which is Cloth B—we often revert to the strategy that worked for us in the past, which is Cloth A. We say, 'Well, lifting Cloth A worked last time, so the solution must be there!' We assimilate the new crisis into our old, comfortable schemas instead of doing the hard work of accommodating our minds to the new reality.

Nova: Wow, that is such a profound connection, laiba. We are literally acting like eight-month-old Laurent, ignoring the new hiding spot because we are so attached to our past actions. It’s a comfort thing, isn't it? Accommodating our minds to new realities is cognitively expensive and emotionally uncomfortable.

laiba: Absolutely. It causes cognitive dissonance. When we encounter information that doesn't fit our current worldview, it’s much easier to distort the information to fit our existing schemas—which is assimilation—than it is to change our entire belief system, which is accommodation. Piaget shows us that this tension between assimilation and accommodation isn't just a childhood phase; it’s the defining struggle of adult intellectual growth.

The child knows their father is much older than they are. But when asked who was born first, the child insists that they were born first, and the father was born them!

laiba: It makes perfect sense from their perspective! The child cannot remember a time before they existed. To them, their own birth is the beginning of time. Therefore, the father must have appeared after them. It’s a complete inability to decenter from their own timeline. Or look at how children learn language. A three-year-old might have a pet canary and learn the word 'bird.' But when they see a pigeon or an eagle, they might not call it a bird because it doesn't look like their canary. They personalize the concept. They assimilate the word 'bird' to mean only specific experience.

Nova: Yes! They are borrowing the collective language of adults, but they are filtering it through their own highly personalized, intuitive structure. And Piaget argues that up to about age seven, children are dominated by this intuitive, egocentric thought. They are highly susceptible to immediate perceptual appearances. But then, something beautiful happens. They begin to develop 'operations'—internalized mental actions that are reversible. And Piaget makes this incredibly bold claim: we cannot develop true, logical operations on our own. We social interaction. We need cooperation.

Think about it: if you live entirely in your own head, you never have to worry about contradicting yourself. You are always right in your own egocentric bubble. It’s only when you interact with another person who says, 'Wait, that doesn't make sense,' or 'You just contradicted what you said five minutes ago,' that you are forced to coordinate your thoughts.

Nova: Yes! It’s like a game of chess. You can't just move your pieces however you want if you’re playing with someone else. You have to follow the rules, and you have to anticipate how your opponent will react to your move. Every move you make is bound by a system of reciprocity.

laiba: Exactly! The chess analogy is perfect. The laws of logical grouping—how we categorize, sequence, and relate ideas—are the rules of the game that ensure consistency and reciprocity. Without cooperation, we would remain stuck in our egocentric phenomenalism, where reality is just whatever we perceive it to be in the moment. Cooperation forces us to 'decenter,' to step outside of our own perspective and construct a shared, objective system of relations.

Nova: And yet, when we look at the adult world today, it feels like we see a lot of people who have forgotten how to play chess, doesn't it? We see so much adult egocentrism, especially online.

laiba: Oh, absolutely! The psychological impact of this is highly visible in our modern social discourse. When we retreat into echo chambers, we are essentially turning off the cooperative mechanism that Piaget said is essential for logic. In an echo chamber, everyone agrees with us, so our egocentric thoughts are never challenged. We don't have to accommodate; we only assimilate. We start to suffer from 'naive realism'—the belief that we see the world exactly as it is, and anyone who disagrees with us is either stupid, biased, or malicious. We lose the ability to mentally sit across the table and identify their 'right hand.'

Nova: That is such a powerful way to put it, laiba. We lose the ability to decenter. We become cognitively rigid, stuck in our own subjective timelines and perspectives, just like the six-year-old who thinks they were born before their dad.
