So we have this powerful instinct to monitor the group, figure out the norm, and stick to it, even if we privately disagree. The problem is, we're terrible at judging what the norm actually is. The Backfire Effect: Why Facts Don't Change Our Minds

Michelle: Brain scans show us what's going on. When we hear information that confirms our beliefs, the pleasure and reward centers of our brain light up. It feels good to be right. But when we're presented with information that contradicts our core beliefs, the parts of the brain associated with physical threat and emotional regulation fire up. Your brain processes a factual challenge the same way it processes a punch to the face. Mark: So you're not calmly updating your knowledge. You're defending yourself from an attack. Michelle: Exactly. And your first line of defense is to question the source of the information. 'The media is biased.' 'The scientists are paid off.' 'That document is a forgery.' Your brain works overtime to find reasons to discredit the new information, and in doing so, it generates new arguments and reasons to support your original belief. You walk away more entrenched than ever. Mark: This explains so much about the internet. And family arguments over the holidays. Is there any way around this? Or are we all just doomed to live in our own personal reality bubbles? Michelle: It's incredibly difficult. McRaney points out that a simple myth is always more cognitively attractive than a complex correction. But the key might lie in what we discussed earlier. The Robbers Cave boys didn't start liking each other because they debated facts. They started liking each other because they had to work together. Mark: The facts followed the feeling, not the other way around. Michelle: It seems so. Changing minds isn't about winning an argument. It's about lowering the threat level. It's about framing the conversation in a way that isn't an attack on someone's identity. It's slow, and it's hard, and it often doesn't work. But understanding the backfire effect is the first step.
