Auwal Ibrahim: It comes down to how pressure affects our memory systems. We have two primary memory systems that dictate performance: working memory and procedural memory. Working memory is our mental scratchpad. It is where we hold and manipulate information to make complex decisions, solve problems, and exercise judgment. When we experience pressure, our brains perceive it as a threat. This triggers a flood of cortisol and anxiety, which essentially hijacks our working memory. Instead of using that mental scratchpad to solve the problem at hand, our brain fills it with worries, doubts, and thoughts of failure. The system runs out of RAM, so to speak, and we choke on thinking tasks.
Nova: Oh, I love that computer analogy! Our brain's RAM gets completely clogged up with "what-if" pop-up windows! And there is this fascinating study mentioned in the book about the Israeli Parole Board that shows how this kind of cognitive depletion affects real-world systems. Researchers Jonathan Levav and Shai Danziger looked at over eleven hundred decisions made by a parole board. They found that the single greatest predictor of whether a prisoner was granted parole wasn't their crime or their rehabilitation record—it was the time of day they appeared before the board! If a prisoner appeared early in the morning or right after a food break, they had about a sixty-five percent chance of getting parole. But right before a break or late in the afternoon, that chance plummeted to near zero. This is why we must design organizational systems that actively mitigate decision fatigue—by scheduling breaks, limiting consecutive high-stakes decisions, and ensuring that critical evaluations are conducted when cognitive resources are at their peak.

Like Nick Anderson in the 1995 NBA Finals. He was a seventy percent free-throw shooter, steps up to the line with his team up by three and just ten seconds left. He misses the first, misses the second, gets his own rebound, gets fouled again, steps back up, and misses two more! The team loses, and his career was never the same. Why did his physical system fail so spectacularly?
Auwal Ibrahim: That is the second type of choking, which affects procedural memory. Procedural memory is where we store well-rehearsed, automatic skills—things we have practiced so many times that we can do them without thinking, like shooting a free throw, playing a piano sonata, or parallel parking. Under pressure, we often fall into the trap of overthinking. We try to consciously control a skill that should be automatic. We start focusing on the mechanics of our movements—the angle of our elbow, the release of the ball, the placement of our fingers. This conscious interference disrupts the smooth, fluid execution stored in our procedural memory. It slows down the process and introduces errors. In essence, we choke because we try to guide a system that runs best on autopilot.

And for physical tasks, we choke because we try to micromanage our automatic habits. It's a double-edged sword! Auwal Ibrahim: It really is. The tardigrade teaches us that tenacity is not about stubbornly fighting against an overwhelming environment with brute force; it is about adaptability and protecting your core systems. In human terms, the authors break tenacity down into four key components: Goals, Focus, Hope, and Coping—the G-F-H-C model. To be tenacious, we must first establish meaningful, personally relevant goals that give us a sense of purpose. Then, we must practice focusing on what we can control while ignoring distractions. We need hope, which is the belief that a positive outcome is possible and that we can find a pathway to achieve it. And finally, we need effective coping strategies to manage our emotional and physiological arousal when things go wrong.
Nova: That G-F-H-C model is so practical! It's like a step-by-step guide to engineering grit. And it reminds me of Mark Heese, the Canadian beach volleyball player. After a devastating defeat in his first national championship, he didn't give up. He used that embarrassment to set a very specific goal: to beat his rival. When we mentor others, we shouldn't just praise their innate intelligence or talent. That can actually increase pressure because they feel they have to maintain an image of perfection. Instead, we should encourage and reward effort, focus, and the ability to find alternative pathways when obstacles arise. We need to help them build their own G-F-H-C systems.

The authors explain that optimism consists of two things: expectations and explanations. Optimistic expectations reduce our anxiety because we predict a positive future, which actually changes our body's internal chemistry. Auwal Ibrahim: It is a stunning demonstration of the mind-body connection, Nova. Our expectations act as a top-down control system, signaling to our autonomic nervous system how to react. If we expect failure and judgment, our brain triggers a threat response, flooding our system with cortisol, which, as we discussed, shrinks our working memory. But if we maintain optimistic expectations, we keep our cognitive systems open, creative, and ready to solve problems. Furthermore, our explanatory style—how we explain past events—is just as important. Optimists view setbacks as temporary, specific, and external, whereas pessimists view them as permanent, pervasive, and personal. If you fail a test and think, "I am stupid, I always fail, and my career is ruined," you are paralyzing yourself. But if you think, "That was a tough exam, I didn't prepare enough for this specific topic, but I can improve next time," you are maintaining your agency and your capacity to act.
