To signal British ships off the coast, a commander named Sarah Aaronsohn would simply open or close a specific window shutter. Now, a window shutter is just a piece of wood. It doesn't "represent" British military strategy. But in that specific network, its state—open or closed—connected the shore to the sea. It created a temporary, powerful channel of communication. The shutter itself became information because of the connection it forged.
Nova: That is such a great way to put it! It is all about the network. And sometimes, the stories that connect us don't have to be true at all to be incredibly powerful. Take the Bible, for example. Historically and scientifically, we know it contains inaccuracies. There was no global flood that wiped out all land animals except those on a single wooden ark. Yet, the Bible has been one of the most successful information technologies in human history. Why? Because it connected billions of people under a shared code of conduct, a shared identity, and a shared vision of the universe.
laiba: Precisely. It created what sociologists call an "intersubjective reality." This is a concept that is absolutely crucial for understanding human history. There are objective realities, like gravity or a virus, which exist whether we believe in them or not. And there are subjective realities, like my personal fear of heights, which exist only in my mind. But intersubjective realities exist in the shared space between our minds. They are things like money, laws, corporations, and nations. A dollar bill is just a piece of paper, or more accurately today, a digital entry on a bank server. It has no objective value. You can't eat it, and it won't keep you warm. But because we all believe the same story about its value, we can use it to buy food and shelter. It connects us in a massive, global economic network.
Nova: Oh, I love that. It is like we are all participating in a giant, collective imagination game! And we do this with modern brands too, right? Think about Coca-Cola. They spend billions of dollars every year on advertising. They aren't selling you a carbonated, sugary beverage; they are selling you "happiness," "togetherness," and "youth." They are weaving a story. And when you buy that red can, you are connecting yourself to that story.
laiba: Yes, and that is exactly how stories stretch our biological limits. Biologically, humans are designed to cooperate in small groups of about a hundred and fifty individuals—what is known as Dunbar's number. Beyond that, we can't personally know and trust everyone. But stories allow us to bypass that limit. They allow millions of strangers to cooperate. If you and I both believe in the U. S. Constitution, or the concept of human rights, or even the value of Bitcoin, we can work together, trade with each other, and build massive civilizations without ever having met before. The story is the glue. But as we will see, that glue can sometimes become incredibly toxic if the story we are believing is completely detached from reality.
Nova: Right, because if the story is a delusion, the network we build on top of it will be a delusional network. And that brings us to the ultimate challenge of any information network: how do you balance the need for order with the need for truth?

laiba: This is the great tension of human history, Nova. To survive and flourish, every human information network needs to do two things simultaneously: it must discover truth, and it must create order. The problem is that these two goals are often in direct conflict. Discovering truth requires questioning assumptions, admitting ignorance, and allowing dissent. But creating order often requires conformity, shared myths, and unquestioning obedience.
Nova: And historically, when societies have to choose between truth and order, they almost always choose order, don't they? It is just so much easier to unite people around a simple, comforting lie than a complex, painful truth. A classic, tragic example of this is the European witch-hunt craze of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This wasn't some ancient, medieval superstition. It was actually fueled by a brand-new information technology: the printing press!
laiba: This is such an important point, Nova. We have this techno-optimistic view that new communication technologies always lead to enlightenment. But when Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in the mid-fifteenth century, the first massive bestsellers weren't scientific treatises. They were religious tracts and, most famously, a book called the, which translates to. Written by a Dominican inquisitor named Heinrich Kramer, this book was essentially a highly detailed, deeply misogynistic guidebook on how to identify, torture, and execute witches. It claimed there was a global, satanic conspiracy of witches threatening Christian society. Because of the printing press, this toxic manual was mass-produced and distributed all over Europe, creating a massive wave of hysteria.
Nova: It is terrifying because it created a completely self-reinforcing loop of fake news. People would read the book, get terrified, accuse their neighbors, and then the authorities would torture those poor, innocent people until they confessed to flying on broomsticks and signing pacts with the Devil. Instead of claiming to have an infallible book or an infallible leader, scientific institutions take error to be inescapable. They build strong, institutional self-correcting mechanisms. Think about how the scientific community handles discoveries. When Dan Shechtman observed quasicrystals in 1982—a structure that contemporary chemistry claimed was physically impossible—he was initially ridiculed. Linus Pauling, a two-time Nobel laureate, famously mocked him, saying, "There are no quasicrystals, only quasi-scientists." But because the scientific network has mechanisms like peer review, replication, and a willingness to alter its definitions based on empirical evidence, Shechtman was eventually vindicated and won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011.

laiba: Yes, in a dictatorship, all information is designed to flow to a single, central hub—the dictator, the party, or the capital. In the Soviet Union, everything flowed to Moscow. In Nazi Germany, to Berlin. The central hub makes all the decisions. This can make them incredibly fast and decisive in a crisis. If there is an emergency, the dictator can just issue a decree, and the entire country moves. But the fatal flaw of a centralized network is that it suffers from blocked information channels. Because there are no independent institutions, no free press, and no opposition parties, subordinates are terrified of sending bad news to the center. If you tell Stalin that his agricultural policies are causing a famine, or that his airplanes are poorly designed, you don't get a policy change—you get executed.
Nova: Oh, like the tragic story of Pavel Rychagov! He was a brilliant Soviet pilot and the commander of the Soviet air force in the late 1930s. During a meeting with Stalin, he bravely spoke the truth. He pointed out that Soviet airplanes were poorly designed and badly produced, calling them "flying coffins." What did Stalin do? He had Rychagov and his wife arrested and executed. When you punish people for speaking the truth, you guarantee that you will only receive pleasing lies.
laiba: Exactly. And we see the catastrophic results of this in how the Soviet Union handled the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. When the reactor exploded, the local officials' first instinct was to cover it up, cut phone lines, and pretend everything was fine to protect their own careers and the image of the state. Even as radiation levels spiked, they delayed evacuations. The Soviet center only acknowledged the disaster after Swedish scientists detected the radiation and the Western press broke the news. Contrast that with the Three Mile Island accident in Pennsylvania in 1979. It was a serious nuclear accident, but because the U. S. is a distributed network with a free press and independent local authorities, a local traffic reporter picked up a police notice, the Associated Press issued a bulletin within hours, and the public was informed almost immediately. The open flow of information allowed for rapid response and global safety improvements.
Nova: It is a classic case of how distributed networks use alternative channels to route around blocks. But now, we are entering a completely new era. We are moving from organic networks, where humans are the ones making the decisions and writing the stories, to inorganic networks.
