Based on the unsubstantiated belief that sparrows were a major threat to grain yields, Mao ordered their extermination. Millions of citizens participated, and the sparrow population was decimated. Instead, he dismissed the scientific method itself, claiming the testing environment was too stressful. He focused on emotional, anecdotal stories of success, which are more persuasive to a desperate audience than cold, hard data. These artists build their credibility not on facts, but on charisma, exaggerated credentials, and the dismissal of all who challenge them.

Building a Bullshit Detection Wheelhouse

This stark example shows that a failure to detect bullshit can have the most severe consequences imaginable.
