Introduction

The momentary confusion that this riddle often causes reveals a deep, unconscious assumption: the automatic association of "surgeon" with "male." This mental hiccup, this brief moment of cognitive dissonance, is precisely what the book Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People by psychologists Mahzarin R. Banaji and Anthony G. Greenwald seeks to uncover. It explores the hidden architecture of our minds, revealing the unconscious biases, or "mindbugs," that shape our perceptions, judgments, and actions, often in ways that contradict our most cherished conscious beliefs.

Our Minds Are Filled with "Mindbugs"

The Power of "Us" vs. "Them"

The Hidden Costs of Stereotypes

The stereotypes held by society get "in our heads" and can unconsciously limit our own potential.

We Must Outsmart the Machine

When orchestras began putting up a screen to hide the identity and gender of the musician during auditions, the results were dramatic. The hiring of female musicians skyrocketed. The simple, low-cost intervention of a screen didn't change the committee members' hidden biases, but it prevented those biases from affecting their decision. This principle—of blinding, using checklists, and creating objective guidelines—is the key to mitigating the impact of our hidden biases in medicine, law, hiring, and our daily lives.
