By the end of the trials, some cats could escape in just five or six seconds! The behavior had become completely automatic. It became a habit.
Dina: It is a classic optimization algorithm! The brain cuts out all the useless, random movements and creates a direct path from the cue to the reward. We do this in daily life without even realizing it. You walk into a dark room—that is the cue. You experience a craving—you want to be able to see. You perform a response—you flip the light switch. And you get the reward—the room is illuminated. It happens on complete autopilot.
Nova: Yes! And we can use this loop to either build good habits or break bad ones. Clear gives us the Four Laws of Behavior Change based on this loop. To build a good habit, you make the cue obvious, the craving attractive, the response easy, and the reward satisfying. To break a bad habit, you do the opposite: make the cue invisible, the craving unattractive, the response difficult, and the reward unsatisfying.
Dina: It is like debugging our behavioral code. If I have a bad habit of constantly checking my phone while I am trying to write code, I need to look at the cue. The phone sitting on my desk is an obvious cue. It triggers a craving for a quick hit of dopamine. The response is easy—just pick it up. And the reward is satisfying in the short term, but terrible for my productivity. To debug this, I have to make the cue invisible by putting my phone in another room.

We like to think we have complete free will, but our choices are heavily influenced by the visual cues around us. Dina: I love that. "Proactive laziness." You do a tiny bit of work now to make the future right choice the easiest choice. In my work, I have started priming my digital environment. Before I shut down my computer at night, I close all my browser tabs except for the specific code file I need to work on the next morning. I open my IDE, set up my workspace, and put my computer in "Do Not Disturb" mode. When I sit down at my desk the next morning, the cue to start working is staring me in the face, and there is zero friction to get started.
Nova: That is brilliant, Dina! You are literally designing your environment to guide your behavior. But what about when we need to make bad habits completely impossible? Clear suggests using "commitment devices" and automation. A commitment device is a choice you make in the present that controls your actions in the future. He tells the story of the French author Victor Hugo, who was facing an impossible deadline to write. He had spent the previous year procrastinating, entertaining guests, and avoiding his writing.
Dina: Oh, I can relate to that level of procrastination! How did he force himself to write?
Nova: He devised a radical commitment device. He asked his assistant to gather all of his clothes—his coats, his trousers, his shirts—and lock them in a large chest. He was left with nothing to wear except a large, knitted shawl. Because he had no suitable clothing to go outside, he was forced to stay in his study. He wrote furiously through the fall and winter of 1830, and he actually finished the book two weeks early!
Dina: That is the ultimate hardware-level constraint! He literally compiled his environment to prevent the "leaving the house" function from running. It is so extreme, but incredibly effective.
Nova: It really is! And we can use modern technology to do the same thing. Clear mentions the habits expert Nir Eyal, who wanted to make sure he and his family went to bed on time. He bought an outlet timer—a simple adapter that plugs into the wall—and connected it to his internet router. Every night at ten p. m., the timer cuts the power to the router, disabling the internet. When the Wi-Fi goes down, everyone in the house knows it is time to wind down and go to sleep.
Dina: That is beautiful. It automates the boundary. You do not have to use willpower to turn off the TV or close your laptop; the system does it for you. It reminds me of the story of John Henry Patterson and the cash register in 1884. Patterson owned a retail store, and he was losing money because his employees were stealing cash from the open drawers. It was a common problem back then. But then he saw an advertisement for a new invention called "Ritty's Incorruptible Cashier"—the first mechanical cash register.
Nova: Ah, yes! The machine that automatically locked the cash and receipts inside after every transaction.
Dina: Exactly! Patterson bought two of them for fifty dollars each.
